.Answer...Applying the indicators or hazard warning switchand check functioning of all indicators. (may needto switch ignition on, prompt not to start engine)

 

Q1 Tell me...Tell me how you would check that the brakes areworking before starting a journey

.Answer...Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakesshould be tested as you set off. Vehicle should notpull to one side

 

.Q2 Tell Me...Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir isand tell me how you would check the windscreenwasher level.

Answer...Identify reservoir and explain how to check level

 

.Q2 Show me...Show me how you would check that the brakelights are working on this car. (I can assist you, ifyou need to switch the ignition on, please don'tstart the engine)

Answer...Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections inwindows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone tohelp. (may need to switch ignition on, prompt not tostart engine)

 

 Q3 Show...Show me / explain how you would check that thepower assisted steering is working before starting ajourney.

Answer...If the steering becomes heavy the system may notbe working properly. Before starting a journey twosimple checks can be made. Gentle pressure onthe steering wheel, maintained while the engine isstarted, should result in a slight but noticeablemovement as the system begins to operate.Alternatively turning the steering wheel just aftermoving off will give an immediate indication that thepower assistance is functioning.

 

Q3 Tell me...Tell me where you would find the information forthe recommended tyre pressures for this car andhow tyre pressures should be checked.

Answer...Manufacturer's guide, use a reliable pressuregauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres arecold, don't forget spare tyre, remember to refitvalve caps.

 

Q4 Show me...Show me how you would check the parking brake(handbrake) for excessive wear, make sure youkeep safe control of the vehicle

Answer...Apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applyingparking brake (handbrake) so that when it is fullyapplied it secures itself, and is not at the end of theworking travel.

 

Q4 Tell me...Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir isand tell me how you would check the windscreenwasher level

Answer...Identify dipstick / oil level indicator, describe checkof oil level against the minimum/maximum markers.

Answer...The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigidpart of the head restraint is at least as high as theeye or top of the ears, and as close to the back ofthe head as is comfortable. N.B. Some restraintsmight not be adjustable

 

Q7 Show me...Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluidreservoir is and tell me how you would check thatyou have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Answer...Identify reservoir, check level against high/lowmarkings.

 

Q7 Tell me...Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensurethat they have sufficient tread depth and that theirgeneral condition is safe to use on the road.

Answer...No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth acrossthe central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and aroundthe entire outer circumference.

Answer...Set all relevant controls including; fan, temperature,air direction / source and heated screen to clearwindscreen and windows. Engine does not have tobe started for this demonstration

 

Q11 Show me...Show me how you would switch on the rear foglight(s) and explain when you would use it/them.(No need to exit vehicle)

Answer...Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights andignition if necessary). Check warning light is on.Explain that they would be used when visibility is reduced to less than 100 metres.

 

Q11 Tell me...Tell me how you would know if there was aproblem with your anti lock braking system

Answer...Warning light should illuminate if there is a faultwith the anti lock braking system
